Our Cataclysm Guild Plans
Aug 18th
First of all, I’m going to have to apologise for the mess.. again. Yes, seeing as I’m planning a new header, and that I’ve never been completely crazy about my current theme, I have decided to go with a new theme. I’ve found one which looks a lot tidier and should hopefully clean up my sidebar a bit (3 columns!), so I’ll get on with that soon along with a bunch of things I want to do in order to just tidy the place up, and hopefully this time I’ll stick with it, the theme isn’t too simple or too “complicated”, so I should hopefully be pretty happy with it, without wanted to fiddle with the CSS and then getting frustrated because I’m too bad at CSS. Anyway, back to the post.
I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it before, in fact I probably haven’t, but a few months ago we decided that the best way for us to enjoy the game was to make our own guild for Cataclysm. Especially when they announced the change to 25 man and 10 man raiding, one lockout per raid per week, we knew we’d be able to settle down with a few friends and raid some 10s. So, for months we tried to come up with a guild name, to no avail, everything one of us said we liked, another didn’t.
The plan almost fell apart, which probably would have led to me eventually quitting not too far into Cataclysm, until a few weeks ago when we went to have a bit of lunch before seeing a movie (Inception) at the cinema, we sat and discussed all sorts of Cataclysm based plans and decided in the end to stay on our current server (Vashj, PvP, EU). It’s not an ideal server, by any means, but we all have a bunch of alts here with different professions, and it would have been a lot of effort to move however many people decide to join come the expansion. Plus there are a few people who might be joining who wouldn’t have moved. Finally, we discussed the guild name again, and decided on ‘SlashPat’.
We won’t be doing any raiding until Cataclysm, perhaps a little in 4.0 before the expansion actually hits while we wait around but right now we don’t have the people, and aren’t really interested yet. We still need to sort the ranks out, and the guild websitei, but we are also going to be looking for a few social members. People who aren’t too interested in raiding, perhaps one or two that can fill in for people when they’re away but that’s something to sort another time, who would like somewhere relaxed to be while they play the game they want to play. It would be awfully nice to play Cataclysm with a social aspect to the guild, as well as the raiding aspect.
At the moment we only have 5 members, and we’re not exactly recruiting yet, we might still need one or two raiders as well, it depends on who decides they’re joining and who doesn’t, but if it sounds interesting, keep us in mind. We plan to have fun while we raid, and we’d also like to get the job done, do the hardmodes and achievements, so when we do start looking for raiding members, we want serious raiders who want to have a laugh, basically. Our social members, of course, don’t need to be serious raiders, just be friendly and a bit social!

- which I’m going to be dealing with. Dan’s asked for a simple guildomatic site though I wouldn’t mind using something else, something more customiseable, either way I have plenty of time to sort it and a lot of other things to do in the meantime [↩]
On Cataclysm Spoilers (safe)
May 6th
I know I’ve said already that I’d appreciate people being careful with spoilers, I’m cool knowing mechanics, new talents, class abilities, racials, boss abilities (but nothing else about the boss), new awesome sounding Hunter pets like the Rhino back in Wrath beta, things like that which wouldn’t exactly ruin my game play, in fact it’d help a bit knowing these things in advance giving it some time to sink in. The things I’m trying to avoid are the kind of thing you find and go “Ooh that’s interesting” small things you stumble upon like.. the sewer crocodile, for example, not game breaking but nice to find. Screenshots of things, ANYTHING, I don’t want to see a thing. Not a sausage. Hints about quests, lore, side lore, anything like that.
If you use your titles to say that the post contains Cataclysm spoilers about something, let’s say spoilers about the Goblin starting zone, and also includes screenshots, then perhaps something like, “Cataclysm: Goblin Starting Zone (screenshots).” Shaman class mechanics perhaps, “Cata: New Elemental spell#3.” Just an example anyway, but if you did that, I’d love you to bits. It would give enough information in the title about the post without giving anything away and allowing those of us who don’t want to read/see to move away.
This is how I enjoy expansions, seeing new things for the first time, it’s exciting, and I know I’m not alone in that. In fact, even though I don’t want to know or see these things, I’m still excited because knowing that there is stuff to avoid means that we’re getting closer to the expansion! From today, in light of the leaked images and stuff, I will be making myself a “Cata Safe” folder in my reader, for those of you who I know will respect people’s wishes and at least make it loud and clear that you’re writing about spoilers, I’m cool to keep reading you guys. If you, or anybody you know, are planning to do this, please, please let me know so that I can add you to this folder. Also, I will have to avoid wow.com for the time being, popped on yesterday only to find the ‘Cataclysm Screenshot of the Day’ in the sidebar, it’s difficult to avoid seeing that.
Good luck on your beta keys!

Cataclysm: Hunter Preview
Apr 9th
(See, I’m doing my bit to make this blog spoiler friendly!)
I’ll be honest, this preview has left me a little worried about the Hunter class. The change from mana to focus is going to cause the class to change a lot, and I’m currently trying out Rogue, the energy mechanic frustrates me somewhat. I’m a little bit scared that I’ll go into Cataclysm and find that I dislike the Hunter class, and what then? Would I just quit after seeing the new content, or reroll? Anyway, that’s me getting a little ahead of myself because this is, after all, just a preview and things are subject to change. Though from what we’ve seen already, Beast Mastery looks to be a strong contender for most interesting talent tree.
For starters: Cobra Shot: “A new shot that deals Nature damage instead of Physical damage. This ability will share a cooldown with Steady Shot. This will give hunters an alternative to Steady Shot on heavily-armored targets, and we will have talent incentives in the Beast Mastery tree to make this a signature shot.” This could either make or break Beast Mastery, giving them an entirely new shot to use instead of Steady Shot. My prediction is that it will hit like a train for a while, but I’m definitely interested in this one. One thing I wonder is how the nature damage aspect will work. Does this mean that Hunters will scale with spell power (or.. intellect I guess now) the same way that Unholy DKs don’t exactly suffer from it? What of hit and resistances?
Trap Launcher: “When used, the next trap can be shot to a location within 40 yards. This provides the current Freezing Arrow treatment to all traps and, as a result, we will be removing the current ability Freezing Arrow. 1-minute cooldown. No global cooldown.” Nice. Freezing Arrow has been a pretty useful tool, this means that we can plonk down an Explosive/Frost/Snake trap in a bundle of enemies in PvP without dragging ourselves into the thick of it at all.
Camouflage: “The hunter enters an obscured state that prevents him or her from taking ranged damage. The character would still be subject to melee or area-of-effect attacks, and dealing or taking damage will break the Camouflage effect. The hunter can move and set traps when under Camouflage, and will receive a damage bonus when attacking while under Camouflage (which will then break the effect).” At first glance, I thought, “what the hell?” and I looked again and I suppose this could be a nice tool for the start of a rotation, especially when used with the new BM talent, Careful Aim which “increases the damage of the next Steady Shot or Cobra Shot, but also increases the cast time of these abilities.” I can live with that, it’s a nice boost for BM.
The new focus mechanic worries me. I get frustrated at Rogue energy which regenerates at roughly 10per second. Focus will regenerate at around 6 per second. Eep. BM has always seemed to me to be the spec which focuses the most on Steady Shot. Steady Shot and Cobra Shot will be the focus regenning shot, thus I can see BM being much better for focus regen. Not to mention BM will receive mastery (which I still haven’t worked out /blush) talents for Haste, which will increase focus regeneration rates.
The pet changes could be just the thing I’ve been asking for! For starters, the mention of active and stabled pets, enabling us to keep pets that we may have certain attachments to but only carrying around the pets we plan to use, has been further confirmed. The amount of active pets allowed to us will probably be 3, though BM hunters may be getting 5 active slots. To switch a pet from passive to active and vice versa we will need to visit a Stable Master, which makes sense. The other pet changes I am particularly fond of? “Additionally, hunters will now start with a race-appropriate pet at level 1 and will be able to tame a different pet at level 10. We are also changing many pet family abilities to provide important buffs and debuffs. The intention is to allow the hunter to be able to swap pets and fill a position if a certain role is missing from the group. The goal is to have all pets provide a damage increase that is very similar and no greater than any other pet. Some examples of the changes we are making to the pet families are listed below:
- Wind Serpents: Will provide a debuff that increases the amount of spell damage taken by an enemy (similar to a weaker version of the warlock ability Curse of Elements).
- Ravagers: Will provide a debuff that will increase an enemy’s Physical damage vulnerability (similar to a weaker version of the warrior ability Rampage).
- Hyenas: Will provide bleed damage (similar to a weaker version of the druid ability Mangle).“
Yes, yes, yes! This could be just the thing to bring back a bit of variety in pet choices, and enforcing Hunters as a ranged class as early as the 1-10 bracket. Good. Those of us who’ve played for a while can manage okay with kiting mostly, though some players struggle with it, and even more so for newer players who may get used to meleeing as normality. Not to mention this is exactly what Razorstorm commented about in my last post ranting about pet mechanics. Nice call
TL;DR Conclusion: I like a lot of these ideas. I think I’m drawn more towards Beast Mastery as my Cataclysm spec from the sounds of a lot of the changes (and I don’t tend to enjoy BM as much as MM or Surv as it stands now). The pet changes might well be just what the doctor ordered, and if these go through I’ll be happy with it. I’m terrified of where focus will lead the Hunter class, as I struggle with energy classes, I’m worried it might lead to me rerolling if I really don’t like it (probably Shadow Priest or Warlock if it came down to it), though of course I will give it a try because I will probably be completely wrong and it will make the Hunter class just a little bit cooler. Of course, if you want to read the full changes, MMO Champion has them up, this post is purely a recap.
You might notice I haven’t kept up on Cataclysm changes too much, but I’d like to have a rough idea on how to play my class when it does come around.

No Cataclysm Spoilers!
Apr 9th
After trying to catch up on my reader a little I came across a post from Icedragon stating that she wishes her Cataclysm to remain unspoiled and I’d like to add – me too. I’m cool knowing class changes, I’d like to go into the expansion with a vague knowledge of class changes: talents, pets, gear/stats, things like that so that I don’t spend hours wondering why the heck I have energy and how to use it, I can get on with seeing the new areas instead, which is the part I’d like to be unspoiled. The lore (that hasn’t yet been spoiled), the quests, zones, NPCs, little funny things that it would be nice to remain unspoiled. I want to see everything on the day, that’s the part that makes a new expansion so fun for me: the discovery of new things. It feels like Christmas!
All I’m asking is just to know, if you plan to write about these things, please make it obvious enough in your title or the first couple of lines, or let me know in advance to put your blog aside until the expansion hits.

2010 WoW Goals Recap
Apr 7th
Around New Year’s, I did a post detailing my WoW goals for 2010, with my imminent server transfer, I thought now would be a nice time to check my progress.
- “Complete Loremaster before Cataclysm.” Check! Finished this one on Monday. My timing actually changed to “before I faction change” because of the way quests work when you faction change, my progress would have been wiped losing me several hundred quests already complete. Now I shouldn’t need to worry about it too much.
- “Reach 10,000 Honourable Kills.” Um.. yeah.. *hides* I’m still only at 2400ish. I got around 40 last night while defending Thunder Bluff though. That counts, right?
- “Finish the AQ quest chain.” Well, I’ve got started. I need to get some goggles from Molten Core, snaffle some Goblin Rocket Fuel, and find Draconic for Dummies II. I’m a little further than I was when I made the goal and I intend to get a fair bit done over the next few weeks, but it’s not finished yet.
- “Gear up all of my 80s with the BiS gear available from 5 mans.” You know, I have tried. Thing is, running heroics over and over gets pretty damn boring especially when you’re on your own and all you seem to get is some kind of sequence between Old Kingdom, Halls of Stone, and Gundrak. My Warlock and Priest are pretty much at the point I want them, my Death Knight and Paladin could use some work.
- “Level Hadlo my warlock to 80.” Success! Once at 80, I decided I needed to race change, I’m not a fan of the female Undead model. So she became Jaedia the Blood Elf Warlock. She can craft plenty of useful gems with her Jewelcrafting which has made me a pile of gold, her mining is levelled, and she has epic flying. Only thing she is missing is the cloak from 5 man TotC HC, or the BoE one from Faction Champions 25.
- “Level Kensa my 65 fecow druid.” She’s been levelled to 68 and her Alchemy is maxed. So she can do everything I needed her to do. Might level a Druid on Terenas instead at some point. I like my alts to compliment my main with their professions and such.
- “Level Jaedi my draenei warrior and see how much gold she can make 1-80.” Deleted. I made her a female Human instead called Briella. She made it to 25 before I saw something shiny. She’ll be next after the Rogue I think. On the topic of ‘see how much gold she can make’, I’m testing that on Argent Dawn, completely new server, no heirlooms, etc. and I’ve made about 3500g so far at level 62 (barely touched Hellfire quests), so not too bad!
- “Level my rogue.” I’ve been levelling *a* Rogue, just not the specific Rogue I meant. This will be my next 80, I’m determined.
- “Same as above for my mage, they’re both in the 20s.” My Mage reached level 41 before I came close to quitting and then SAN was formed and I started focusing on my Rogue instead. If I level a Mage now, it’ll probably be on Terenas. Shame really, abandoning my first Blood Elf at level 41.
- “I’d also like to get 100 mounts on Fae.” I will go back to working on this at some point, it is going to require a few drops, mind you I can get a few mounts while I’m grinding back upto Crusader when I faction change, and I think I can afford 1 or 2 PvP mounts with my 630 Stone Keeper’s Shards, so I’ll get there.
- “Finally finish getting my Rusted Proto Drake.” SO DESPERATE FOR THIS. I’ve mentioned it in my to do list before I transfer, and it really bugs me that it’s the only achievement I need, and always will. The same way it bugs me knowing that I finally had a bear group (back in the ZA days) and the main tank buggered off after he got his..
- “Finish all holiday achievements.” Yarp, working on it. Just need Children’s Week and Midsummer now. I seem to be one of a rare few that quite likes the Violet Proto Drake, which is cool, because I’ll have 2 when I finish my meta. My Priest being my main for so long before completed this at Christmas. Yep, my alt has the Violet Proto Drake before my main.
- “Find and kill Loque’nahak.” Done and received Frostbitten! This would have been a couple of months ago now, I was so proud of myself. I’d say Frostbitten and Bloody Rare are harder than Loremaster because it depends on chance. Being in the right place at the right time and hope you kill it before somebody else can.
- “Get Chef and Salty.” I got Chef, need 9 more recipes for 160 cooking recipes. Salty is probably one of the next I will work on, I need to get my fishing head on first. Not to mention the Rat pet and Turtle mount, I need to try and fish those up too.
- “40 Exalteds.” I’m on 37 at the moment, though I think I’ll lose one when I transfer because I have Tranquillien the Blood Elf lowbie faction. I pugged my way to Black Temple and Mount Hyjal exalted, and I just need Ashen Verdict, Argent Dawn, Thorium Brotherhood, and probably Frostwolf for my last one.
Count: 3.5/10 – a lot in progress and a few have changed over the past few months. I can safely say that my new goals are as follows:
- Finish the AQ chain.
- Complete BB King.
- Achieve One Light in the Darkness.
- Take over some gold, heirlooms and things to sell when I faction change and server transfer.
- Level my Rogue on Argent Dawn to 80.
- Gear up my Death Knight.
- Level my Human Warrior on Terenas to 80.
- Get Salty, plus Rat pet, and Turtle mount.
- 40 Exalteds, only a few left.
- Complete Children’s Week and Midsummer for the holiday meta.
- Reach 10,000 honourable kills.
- Obtain 100 mounts.
Anything else I feel like doing will be done as and when I’m in the mood. I make these lists because I enjoy the game more with certain goals in mind, even if I never actually reach those goals. I first and foremost play for fun.

After Arthas
Jan 23rd
As usual I’m late to the party, this shared topic is one I wanted to get involved in and in all my IRL stuff, managed to forget. Ringo from Flinthammer Hall suggested the following topic:
What now? What happens to the world of Azeroth? What happens to the people, the factions. How does this affect the relationships between the Alliance and Horde? What does your character think happens next? Is this the end for you, as a player, especially if you started, as I did, with Warcraft III? Is this the “end of history?”
Other responses from: Zan, Littlebark, and Ophelie.
What happens to the world of Azeroth?
Arthas is dead. Not too soon after, Deathwing breaks free. The world of Azeroth is once again torn asunder (the first time by the destruction of the Well of Eternity), races are left stranded (goblins), entire zones changed by the extreme power of Deathwing. That’s for a different topic, another time.
Looking at the undead armies and the Lich King, as Uther said in Halls of Reflection, Azeroth needs a Lich King. If we didn’t have a Lich King, there would be nobody to control the scourge and stop them from swarming Azeroth. Somebody will need to replace Arthas, and my money is on Bolvar Fortdragon. They don’t necessarily have to be evil, in fact, it’s going to be a huge sacrifice, but a necessary one. For the future of Azeroth.
What happens to the people, the factions. How does this affect the relationships between the Alliance and Horde?
The Alliance and Horde will have to work together to not only defeat Arthas, but decide who the next Lich King will be. Bolvar has lost so much, he has nothing left to lose by making the sacrifice. This causes a temporary truce, though I don’t think it will last long. There will be issues leading upto Wrath which again will cause disagreements between the Horde and the Alliance, at the moment, we only know rumours, not facts.
What does your character think happens next?
My character figures that so much has happened, that it has to come to an end now. She expects that after Kil’jaeden has been defeated, the Lich King, Yogg Saron, and so on, that really, what else could happen? With this thought in mind, you can imagine she gets quite pissed off when Death Wing pops up, determined to give Azeroth some peace.
Is this the “end of history?”
No, of course not. There is still a lot to deal with. Deathwing, the rest of the black dragonflight. The Emerald Dream and what exactly is the nightmare. There are still Old Gods locked away, not to mention the Elemental Lords and Sargeras, if Yogg Saron and C’Thun managed to corrupt people from their prisons, I’m sure others can also. There are endless pieces of lore with loose ends, just because the RTS games haven’t shown it yet, doesn’t mean it isn’t being planned or written. This part is surely more exciting, not knowing exactly what’s around the corner.

2010 WoW Goals
Dec 31st
I liked Elsen’s post detailing her goals from 2009 and for 2010 and I think I’m going to copycat the idea and post a few of my own goals for WoW in 2010. I have a few things in mind I really want to finish up, and really it’d be nice to see them written down for once.
- Complete Loremaster before Cataclysm. This is my main goal at the moment, I’m slowly working on it between daily random dungeon, raids and such. Doing a little bit a day until it’s complete should get it finished before Cataclysm I expect.
- Reach 10,000 Honourable Kills – currently at 2k so this might be a stretch for me, the PvP hater.
- Finish the AQ quest chain. With a ring that grants you underwater breathing, which sounds quite awesome for Cataclysm (also a stolen idea from Dan), and some awesome lore, I’d love to see it to the end.
- Gear up all of my 80s with the BiS gear available from 5 mans (triumph emblems, Frozen Halls drops, craftables maybe..) not only because it’s fun, but because levelling them in Cataclysm will be a lot easier.
- Level Hadlo my warlock to 80, she’s 75 at the moment and working on collecting useful gems from JC tokens, making some nice gold from that right now, also need to level her mining and get her epic flying.
- Level Kensa my 65 fecow druid, I mostly want her to be my Alchemist/Herber as herbing druids are awesome, as such I want to get her epic flight form and do the quest so I can summon the boss in Sethekk. Also, she’s my only fecow and she’s fluffy.
- Level Jaedi my draenei warrior and see how much gold she can make 1-80. She’s currently level 8, though I might try to focus on a few other alts first.
- Level my rogue, not sure whether to bother with professions on her but I’d like to get her to max level at least.
- Same as above for my mage, they’re both in the 20s.
- I’d also like to get 100 mounts on Fae, I’m not so fond of the horde’s orange dragonhawk reward, especially when I have the Sunreaver Dragonhawk which is miles better. Would like the points, a few mounts and also a stepping stone assuming there will be 150 mounts or something in Cataclysm, with a potentially awesome mount reward.
- Finally finish getting my Rusted Proto Drake, have only needed 1 Light for a while now. It’s starting to mock me.
- And while on the topic of Proto Drakes, finish all holiday achievements to get my hunter’s Violet Drake, my priest got it with Merrymaker and it’s so pretty and fast, I love the colour, and dying for a 310% mount.
- I finished Bloody Rare a while ago, and I am one off Frostbitten. Find and kill Loque’nahak.
- Get Chef and Salty, these are a lot of points. I probably won’t use the titles but they’re worth getting.
- 40 Exalteds. I need to get my rep up with Hyjal and BT factions, also Argent Dawn and Cenarion Circle. That will get me quite close.
I’m actually interested to see a few more WoW Goals floating around, not starting this a meme or anything but please feel free to do one of these posts too.
Happy New Year!

Ooh I had a think
Sep 22nd
There are still several “drop location is unknown” vanity pets to be added ingame.
Personally think the Wind Rider and Gryphon will be faction specific, perhaps bought directly from the mount vendor near Krasus Landing? I have been told that the Pandaren Monk is BoA, so that isn’t included in this, however, one of them could be for another pet achievement, probably 100 pets. Personally hope that they include a 100 pet achievement with the Icecrown patch, or with Cataclysm, and the Core Hound is the reward, in my opinion that would be a decent outcome. The Zipao Tiger uses the same model as the cat in the Oracles quest, so perhaps related to Scholazar Basin/the Oracles in some way. This is all speculation on my part, but I think it would make sense. Lil KT and the Pandaren Monk are, however, a complete mystery to me..
More interesting Cataclysm updates
Aug 22nd
- The Cataclysm will be released after Icecrown Citadel, not only with the date but also lore-wise.
- The dances we were told were coming with Wrath are still being worked on…
- Once faction changes have been sorted, they are planning on implementing race changes, which would mean a Blood Elf Paladin could switch to a Tauren, for example.
- They may be adding the ability to reorder the characters on the character sheet, thank God I’ve wanted this one for a while xD
- The guild levelling system being discussed will enable you to create guild heirlooms. You’ll be able to buy profession plans with this and anyone in your guild can wear the item, and it scales with level.
- In order to ensure enhancement shamans and hunters are able to share the same gear, Blizzard will try to give enhancements similar talents to those given to rets in order for them to use the same gear.
- In 3.3 they’re talking about pets scaling from all hunter stats and also allowing buffs from raid encounters to affect them (uh oh I smell nerfs inc already…)
- Also in 3.3, they’re planning to make it so that pets can’t be hit by boss AoEs but others (i.e. PvP) can affect them.

New Xpac Hunter Relevant Changes
Aug 22nd
- Hunter’s will now use focus, not mana, this will work the same way as energy for a rogue, and capped at 100.
Steady shot will increase the rate of regaining focus.
Rogue energy comes back at a 10 / sec rate, Hunter focus comes back at 6/sec (12/sec with steady shot). - Aspect of the Viper will be removed or redesigned as there will be no use for its’ current state.
- Ammo will become an item, rather than a consumable.
- Armour pen is being removed and replaced with something called ‘Mastery’.
- Attack power is being removed from items, instead hunters will aim for items high on agility. It will still appear on items such as rings so that they will still be attractive to both hunters and warriors, though these won’t be high on agility/strength.
- Haste is being changed so that it now increases the rate at which you regain focus.
New Legendary announced for Icecrown Citadel!
Shadowmourne, a legendary 2handed axe which will drop from The Lich King, for Death Knights and Hunters.
I’ve heard a lot of whine about the new expansion changes, but, in my opinion, revamping the old continents so that they’re useable again, new races and class combinations, massive profession changes.. and of course the above information, which btw I for one am quite happy about, all sounds like a good idea. People can complain, but, if they don’t give the game changes like these… won’t it just become mundane, repetitive and boring?
